Claim your profileI'm a writer, editor and nonprofit news executive living in Portland, Oregon. I was an original founding member and former managing editor of the Flathead Beacon, which is perennially named Montana's best weekly newspaper. The Beacon was called the "best newsroom in Montana" in the Columbia Journalism Review and named by Outside magazine as one of the "Best Places to Work" in the U.S. I left the Beacon to be the managing editor of Underscore News in October 2021 and then became Underscore's executive director in May 2022. Underscore is a nonprofit news organization based in Portland, Oregon that focuses on Indigenous issues in the Pacific Northwest. Underscore publishes its work in media outlets regionally and nationally, and is a partner of ICT, formerly Indian Country Today, the largest Indigenous news site in the U.S. My articles, fiction and essays have appeared in magazines and newspapers across the country, including Condé Nast Traveler, USA Today, The Drake, Hatch Magazine, Montana Quarterly, Big Sky Journal, Whitefish Review and more. My writing has been anthologized in two books, "Unearthing Paradise: Montana Writers in Defense of Greater Yellowstone" and "Montana: Warts and All," which is a collection of the Montana Quarterly's best writing from the last decade. My journalism has won a variety of awards, including first-place honors from the Montana Newspaper Association for environmental writing, business and economic coverage, education reporting, agriculture reporting, health writing, feature writing and column writing. I have also received the state's top public service journalism award for an investigative series on law enforcement corruption, as well as three first-place awards for outdoors coverage, including the 2010 Mark Henckel Award. I also serve on the board of the Portland chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA PDX), including as president in 2023. AAJA PDX is the only membership organization serving journalists of color in Oregon and southwest Washington, with a mission of advancing diversity in newsrooms and ensuring fair and accurate coverage of communities of color.
