Phoenyx Powell is a travel writer and accessibility advocate specializing in accessible travel, airline experiences, and real-world trip planning for disabled and neurodivergent travelers. She is the founder of Phoenyx Travels, where she publishes in-depth guides on flying with a disability, navigating TSA and airport systems, and evaluating accessibility beyond surface-level claims. After a 2016 motorcycle accident resulted in a traumatic brain injury and long-term mobility challenges, Phoenyx returned to travel in 2022 and later chose to amputate her leg in 2023. She now travels regularly across the U.S. and internationally, using lived experience to inform her reporting and analysis of accessibility in travel environments. In addition to running Phoenyx Travels, she works as a freelance travel writer and content creator. She has partnered with tourism boards, contributed to travel publications, and provides accessibility-informed content and insights that help destinations and brands better understand how travelers actually move through their spaces. Her work focuses on practical, experience-based guidance, with particular expertise in air travel accessibility, airport navigation, and identifying gaps between advertised and actual accessibility.

This project stands out because it moves beyond surface-level accessibility claims and shows what inclusive travel actually looks like in practice. It documents Oregon becoming the first Accessibility Verified state while testing those standards across real environments, from airports to outdoor experiences. Instead of relying on brand messaging, the work focuses on verification, transparency, and usability. With over 750 locations evaluated across 200+ accessibility data points, it highlights a shift toward accountability in the travel industry. The project combines firsthand experience with industry-level insight, making it both a practical resource for travelers and a case study in how accessibility should be done.

This project examines North Alabama as a case study in destination-wide accessibility, going beyond individual accessible features to evaluate how an entire region supports disabled and sensory-sensitive travelers. What makes this work notable is its emphasis on consistency and execution. Rather than focusing on a single accessible hotel or attraction, it documents how accessibility is embedded across multiple cities, from infrastructure and outdoor experiences to dining and accommodations. The project also highlights the role of community-led initiatives, such as accessibility and sensory training programs, in creating environments that are not only compliant but genuinely usable.
