Claim your profileBrian X. Chen, the lead consumer technology writer for The New York Times, writes Tech Fix, a weekly column about grappling with tech's impact on society. In 2019, he was part of a team of reporters that received a George Polk award and a Gerald Loeb award for a series of stories investigating how social media giants like Facebook grossly mishandled user data on their networks. The series was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. Separate from his tech column, Brian has regularly written about the issues surrounding the AAPI community in Hollywood and corporate America. In 2022, his feature story about workplace discrimination against professionals of Asian descent won an award for excellence in business reporting from the Asian American Journalists Association. Before joining The Times in 2011, he worked at Wired, where his reporting on Apple and the wireless industry led to the publication of “Always On,” a book about how the smartphone transformed business and culture. In 2011, Brian was a founding editor of Wirecutter, a comprehensive guide to buying the best products, before the site was acquired by The New York Times. He has been a technology commentator on several radio and television programs, including Fresh Air, Marketplace, Bloomberg West, CNN and CNBC.
