He ran to the radio station. Within weeks, he had his FCC third class license and the Thursday slot on WNYU's afternoon show. He also became music director. An internship at WNBC working with General Manager Kevin Metheny and Music Director Buzz Brindle was Gary’s introduction to commercial radio. Following graduation, Gary joined the editorial staff of Circus Magazine -- American's Hard-Rock Magazine -- and worked his way up the masthead to Managing Editor. During this time, he landed a weekend shift at album rocker WRCN on Long Island’s East End and hosted Sundays for four years before moving to alternative WDRE in Garden City for weekend work. He left Circus magazine in June of 1994 to host DRE After Dark fulltime, then became production director when the station reverted back to its previous call letters, WLIR.Gary became program director of WLIR in June of ’98, a position he held for five years until the station was sold. He moved to New York’s Hudson Valley to become Program Director and afternoon host at classic-rocker WPDH. After a nine-year run, he moved to New Jersey in July of 2012 and became Operations Manager for the Clear Channel cluster in Sussex County. Here he oversaw WSUS (Mainstream AC) and Max 106.3 (Hot AC) while serving as Program Director and afternoon host at WNNJ. (Clear Channel became iHeartMedia in September of 2014.)In October of 2020, Gary joined Neversink Media Group as General Manager and Morning Host of Pocono 96.7, broadcasting every weekday morning out of 530 Main Street in Stroudsburg. Radio and writing have always been Gary’s fortes. His book ‘Classic Rock’ was published in 1995 by Metro Books. He writes crossword puzzles as a hobby, which regularly appear in The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.
