Work has examined firearms, housing, federal regulations, courts, sports, workplace safety, health care, crime, and more. Honors include being named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Public Service Journalism and a recipient of the George Polk award, Gerald Loeb Award and a National Press Foundation award.Recent projects examined the full extent of gun deaths in Wisconsin and revealed how accidental shootings involving children are prosecuted differently in Milwaukee compared with the rest of the state. Earlier work revealed the danger from electrical fires to renters in Milwaukee, the case of a woman who had a stroke next to a top stroke center but was turned away, and violence encountered by hospital workers.Other work exposed dangers from the barrel refurbishing industry; delved into a case of witness intimidation; examined danger in mixed martial arts; revealed a flawed undercover federal sting; revealed deadly risk from contaminated alcohol wipes; uncovered corruption in gun stores; exposed misleading crime numbers and police misconduct and more. During my tenure an an assistant investigations editor, I worked with reporters to do investigative pieces, developed a breaking news plan and helped reporters and editors advance content across social media networks. Recently, I have participated in trainings for fellow journalists on strategies to reduce polarization with groups such as Poynter Institute for Media Studies, Trusting News, Good Conflict and Northwestern University Medill School. I have spoken on panels at the Braver Angels national convention, Investigative Reporters and Editors, Marquette University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison Medical School and others about how I crossed divides with gun owners in our project 'Behind the Gun.'Tips welcome: jdiedrich@gannett.com.
