Claim your profileCovering cybersecurity since 2006 from San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and now London. The subjects of my reporting have included: a pair of security researchers who got mixed up with a Dutch drug gang and wound up hacking the Port of Antwerp in one of Europe’s biggest cocaine smuggling operations (‘The Mob’s IT Department,’ July 2015); a hacker in Colombia who interfered with elections throughout Latin America for nearly a decade (‘How to Hack an Election,’ March 2016); and a cyber-weapons dealer in India who sold hacking software to the government of Mauritania in West Africa and created a hostage crisis in Italy (‘The Mauritania Exploit, January 2017). My recent reporting has focused on China and tampering of motherboards and computer code in the electronics supply chain (‘The Big Hack,’ October 2018, and its follow-up, ‘The Long Hack,’ February 2021). I've also looked at efforts by China to steal trade secrets from Western corporations, including the story of a Ministry of State Security intelligence officer who recruited engineers at jet engine manufacturers in the U.S. and Europe to steal data — and who was ultimately lured by the FBI to Belgium and arrested, carrying with him a journal that detailed years of espionage and career disgruntlement (‘To Catch a Chinese Spy, September 2022). I often use LinkedIn to connect with people who can help further my reporting efforts.
