(No PR pitches, please.) ~ I cover technology for Bloomberg News and Businessweek magazine, focusing on Alphabet and Google. My interests include AI, the culture of Silicon Valley, criminal justice and migration. From 2017 to 2020, I reported for Reuters in Mexico City, where I covered trade, migration and how drug cartels exploit tech and telecoms. My work has been recognized by organizations including the Online News Association, Deadline Club, the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Headliner Awards. In 2023, I led an investigation into how police exploit Google's vast trove of user data. Shortly after publication, Google cut off a key source of data for law enforcement. For this work, my colleagues and I received the James Madison Freedom of Information Award from the Society of Professional Journalists' Northern California chapter. In 2024, I was a finalist for the Livingston Award, which recognizes the nation's best journalists under 35, for a series of stories I reported from the US-Mexico border about the inner workings of the human smuggling industry. I often write people on LinkedIn who I think can inform my work and help me understand the full picture. I take source protection seriously and am happy to chat off the record about the process of working with a journalist, as well as my personal approach. I welcome tips and story ideas at jlove78@bloomberg.net.
