Claim your profileBrontë Wittpenn is an Emmy award-winning visual journalist who specializes in both documentary photography and filmmaking. Having been raised in Montana, she has remained committed to photographing rural America and the depth of the people who call it home. Her vision focuses on using her craft to inform viewers intellectually and move them emotionally through deeply reported, character-driven stories about individual lives, circumstances and struggles. Her work reflects the places she’s lived including Flint, Michigan, Florida and Texas. She currently lives in Oakland, California working as a staff photojournalist at the San Francisco Chronicle. Wittpenn's work has been recognized by the National Press Photographers Association where she was awarded the 2020 Multimedia Journalist of the Year. She has also received accolades from the Associated Press Managing Editors, Hearst Journalism Awards, Howard Scripps Awards and won two Emmy awards for videos she produced in the Bay Area. Her work placed first in both the Headliners Foundation of Texas and the National Edward R. Murrow Awards for a 2020 investigative series exposing a pattern of excessive violence used by sheriff's deputies in a Central Texas county. She is a recipient of the 2019 Pulitzer Center Global Reporting Grant where she traveled to Iraq. She is also a 2019 graduate of the Eddie Adams Workshop, the VII Academy and has been a guest speaker at the University of Texas, Austin Community College and the University of Montana. She is a certified drone pilot and has had her work featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, Tampa Bay Times, Flint Journal, Bloomberg News, Austin American-Statesman, San Francisco Chronicle and more.
