I've also earned national recognition from the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, the Association of Health Care Journalists, the GLAAD Media Awards, the Outdoor Writers Association of America, the National Society of Newspaper Columnists and the Raliance collaboration for sexual violence prevention. Before that, I taught English in rural China. I grew up in Iowa, and I enjoy gardening and hiking. I bake frighteningly-addictive sugar cookies, and during COVID I designed and built a 7-foot witch house in my yard.
