Heather Mongilio is a reporter with USNI News. Her coverage focuses on personnel issues within the Navy. She has a master's degree in science writing from MIT. Heather was recently the military affairs reporter and Report for America corps member for the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland. Her coverage focused on the Naval Academy and Fort Meade. Heather previously worked as the health, Fort Detrick and social services reporter for The Frederick News-Post. In addition to her three beats, she also covered Mount Airy and Brunswick. She hosted the paper's podcast Frederick Uncut. As a health writer, she wrote about domestic violence, traumatic brain injuries, neuroscience and environmental mental health. Most recently, she led the coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic.Heather interned with Environmental Health News, where she looked at psychological effects of natural and man-made environmental disasters. She also looked at toxins and their environmental effects.Heather worked as a crime and courts reporter with the Carroll County Times, covering Carroll County in Maryland. She was formerly a site editor at ARLnow.com, a local news website based in Arlington County, Virginia. She is a former editor-in-chief of The Eagle, the student-run newspaper at American University. She lead the newsroom through multiple discussions and was the final editor on all articles. Heather graduated from American University in 2015 with a degree in Print Journalism and Psychology.Heather previously interned with USA Today, the Carroll County Times and the American Psychological Association.
