Over more than nine years, his reporting from postings in Shanghai and Beijing influenced global policy on China, from Washington to London and beyond. His investigative work uncovered important new information on Xinjiang, Hong Kong and Taiwan, on China's growing intolerance of dissent more generally, and on the questions over the origins of Covid. He is the recipient of a George Polk award, two Prix Bayeux awards, a UK Royal Television Society award, a Foreign Press Association of London award, an Amnesty International Media award and numerous Asia-regional prizes including two Hong Kong Free Press awards. He was the 2020 One World Media International Journalist of the Year. His podcast, Fever; the Hunt for Covid's Origin won several radio awards, including a Royal Society Audio Award from the Association of British Science Writers.
