For a story for Georgia Magazine on the topic: “Growing fruit trees at home,” I’m looking for experts in Georgia who can guide the home gardener through the process of planting fruit trees. Are you or do you know of a source who can answer the following questions? MUST BE IN GEORGIA. 1. What does the home gardener need to know to grow peach, apple, fig, cherry and even citrus (for those in Southern Georgia) trees in your own yard. 2. What are key considerations and cautions? 3. Is there a minimum size yard/garden area needed in order to grow fruit trees? 4. Does such a garden begin with knowing your specific plant zone and a soil test? How does the home garden arrange for a soil test? 5. Explain “chill” hours and why these are important to successfully growing fruit trees. 6. How does the home gardener prepare the site? 7. What books and other publications/references are recommended for the home gardener planting fruit trees? 8. Do you have art available relating to the topic? An orchard in Georgia, etc.?
