She produces content and manages live field reports for Nightly News with Lester Holt, Today Show, MSNBC and across NBC News' digital platforms. She also produces breaking news from across the southern US and has produced overseas covering breaking news in Latin America, the 2023 earthquake in Turkey as well as both wars in Ukraine and Israel.Kayla's passion for journalism began early in her career while embedded with Air Station New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina where she launched the Weather Channel series franchise, "Coast Guard Storm Stories." Later, as a producer for Oprah’s Next Chapter and The Oprah Winfrey Show, she was able to write, develop and produce quality human interest stories that reached millions of people. In 2015, while based in Chicago, Kayla premiered her first feature length documentary, selectEd, for which she spent an entire year embedded as the producer/director in a Chicago Public High School. The film was nominated from over 1,000 submissions as “One of the top documentary films of the year”, winning the prestigious Gold Award at Atlanta’s 2015 Spotlight Documentary Film Series, and was an official selection for the 2015 Sarasota International Film Festival, 2015 Waterfront Film Festival, and 2015 New York No Limits Film Festival. Later that year, she had the honor of working as a freelance network news field producer for Al Jazeera America's Chicago Bureau, where she produced and covered national and breaking news for a national and global audience. In 2018, she relocated to Austin, Texas to help launch the Spectrum News Originals Documentary Division for their Austin-San Antonio Bureau. There, she was awarded the Lonestar Regional Emmy Award as Producer/Shooter for the hour-long documentary feature "Lonestar Crisis: The Opioid Epidemic." In 2019, she executive produced a special on the Sutherland Springs Church Massacre and received a 2019 Regional Emmy nomination for Continuing Coverage. That same year, the team was tasked with producing and developing content for the Los Angeles market as well. Her 2020 news documentary feature, LA Under the Gun, premiered as part of a live town hall for the Los Angeles, CA market received the 2020 regional Emmy Award for Live event.
