According to a new study being presented at the American Heart Association’s EPI|Lifestyle Scientific Sessions 2026 in Boston, young adults aged 18-40 with prediabetes show widely varying five-year risks of progressing to type 2 diabetes, with those having higher fasting glucose levels and meeting criteria for GLP-1RA medication treatment facing the highest risk, suggesting the need for tailored, intensive prevention strategies beyond a one-size-fits-all approach. Seeking commentary, including: (1) What is the most important takeaway from this study for young adults who may not think diabetes is something they need to worry about yet? (2) What can young people do if they already have prediabetes to keep it from progressing to type 2 diabetes?
