I am seeking people with direct knowledge of the Sakizaya people of Hualien County, Taiwan, for a long-form reported feature in The Diplomat. Ideal sources include Sakizaya elders and community leaders, language revival practitioners, cultural organisers, historians, anthropologists, linguists, and Taiwan-based Indigenous rights advocates who can speak to the community’s historical experience, its official recognition in 2007, ongoing efforts to revive language and ritual practice, land rights, and the ways political instability or conflict could affect cultural survival. I am especially interested in sources with first-hand experience or deep field knowledge of the Sakizaya in eastern Taiwan, as well as contacts who can help facilitate respectful community access, translation, and background context. Reporting will be trauma-informed and consent-based. Background information and on-the-record interviews are both welcome.
Deadline: May 30th, 2026 7:00 PM ET
