Claim your profileI am Defence Editor at The Economist, where I cover a wide range of military and security issues including war, nuclear weapons, intelligence and cyber security. I also serve as a Visiting Senior Fellow at the Department of War Studies at King's College London. Prior to joining The Economist in 2018, I served as Senior Research Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), Senior Fellow at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change and Research Associate at Oxford University’s Changing Character of War Programme. I have published books on Iran’s nuclear programme and India’s armed forces, written for a wide range of newspapers and journals, and appeared regularly on radio and television.I hold degrees from Cambridge and Harvard, where I served as a Kennedy Scholar from Britain to the United States. I have given evidence to the House of Commons’ foreign and defence committees and to the House of Lords’ international relations and defence committee, as well as lecturing regularly to the UK Defence Academy. At The Economist I have reported extensively on the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, including more than a dozen cover stories, and my special reports have covered military technology, lessons from Ukraine and the future of intelligence.
